If you come from another country or are just passing through, the roads in Moldova can sometimes be special, sometimes stressful. At Justrent we guide you on how to avoid problems with traffic fines when driving a rental car, so you can enjoy your vacation without worries.

Why are you responsible for fines?

When you sign the contract for a rental car, be careful: everything you do behind the wheel is at your own risk. If you get a fine, whether it's stopped by the police or caught by a speed camera, you have to pay it. So read carefully terms and conditions, know what to expect!

What kind of fines can you get in Moldova?

In order not to spoil your vacation, it's good to know which fines can cost you dearly. Here are some violations according to the laws of Moldova:

    • Excessive speed: the roads, especially the ones outside the city, challenge you to press the gas pedal, but if you go too fast, you can find yourself with a stinging fine. If you exceed the limit by more than 40 km/h, you are fined up to 1,800 lei, plus you also get some penalty points.
    • Illegal parking: In Chisinau, parking spaces are limited. If you leave your car where it shouldn't, you can opt for a fine of 150-300 lei.
    • Not engaging the belt: If you forget to wear your seat belt, the police and surveillance cameras do not forgive. The fine is around 600 lei, plus penalty points.
    • State of intoxication: The permissible alcohol limit is 0.3 g/l in the blood. If you exceed it, you face a large fine, suspension of your license or even jail time.
    • Crossing the red traffic light: Cameras are everywhere. Such a mistake costs you between 600 and 1,200 lei.

These are just a few examples. The advice is to be careful, keeping an eye out for every traffic sign or the technical condition of the car.

What are the stages of receiving and paying fines to rental cars?

    1. Violation is caught: Either the police stop you, or a traffic surveillance camera captures your violation.
    2. The fine goes to Justrent: The car is in the name of the rental company, so we receive this report.
    3. You are responsible so you pay: We send you the fine, using the data from the contract. Sometimes the fine can be paid even from the amount you leave as a guarantee when renting the car
    4. How do you get away cheaper?: If you pay the fine within 72 hours, you only pay 50% of the total amount of the fine. There is also the option to pay only 25% of the amount, if you admit that you were wrong and sign an agreement with the police.

Tips to avoid breaking traffic rules

    • Use Waze: The application warns you where there are speed cameras or police to avoid fines for breaking the speed limit.
    • Park only in specially arranged places: In Chisinau, find paid parking or ask locals where the nearest legal parking is.
    • Pay attention to the signs: In congested areas, it's easy to miss a sign. You better slow down and check for traffic signs.

Luxury car rental in Chisinau is convenient, but you have to be careful. A moment of inattention can cost you dearly. Check your car, follow traffic rules, and if you do get a fine, pay it quickly to get away cheaply.
